The Best Way to Wash Human Hair Wigs

Why Wash a Wig?

Wigs are an essential part of the modern woman’s hair accessories. In fact, they come to the rescue at unusual times, saving us from unwarranted hair embarrassment. Whether you are rocking a 100% human hair wig or a synthetic wig, maintenance is definitely a way to keep it in shape for a long time. Furthermore, it’s even more embarrassing to have smelly hair. It’s important to regularly wash human hair wigs.

Your human hair wig deserves the same hair treatment as you would your normal hair. However, you need to be even gentler, so treat it with love and care. Your wig should be washed at least after 5 to 7 uses to avoid it having a smell.

Most human hair wigs are lace frontals, 360 lace frontals, lace closure wigs and full lace wigs. So, avoid cheap hair care products that will damage the strands.

Tips to Prepare

  • Don’t wash human hair wigs on your head. Remove the wig from your head before washing.
  • Use a wide tooth comb to comb out the tangles, starting from the tip of the hair and work towards the lace front.
  • If you are washing a long wig, wash under the tap or shower and not in the sink or bowl to prevent tangles.
  • Use cold water to wash the wig.

How To Wash Human Hair Wigs

  1. Remove the wig and flip it inside out. This enables you to wash the lace cap on which the hair was sewn on to remove the dirt and oils.
  2. Dip the cap into the water to wet it. Apply shampoo on the lace and gently use your fingers to rub with some pressure to remove all the dirt.
  3. Rinse the lace cap and then prepare to wash the hair.
  4. To wash your human wig, run water into a bowl, add your favorite shampoo with moisture into the water and bubble up. Stay away from alcohol based products. Next, insert the wig into the water and rub with your fingers to wash it as gently as you can to remove the dirt.
  5. When you are done shampooing the wig, remove the wig from the bowl and place under running water to remove the dirt.
  6. Shake off the excess water, and then apply a mild conditioner to moisturize the hair. Wash the conditioner off and air dry.
  7. Flip the wig and leave out to dry.

Bonus Tips:

  • Do not use a blow dryer to dry your wig, always dry naturally. When conditioning, do not apply conditioner to the base of the hair.
  • To add coils, a plastic roller can be used when wet, so that when it dries the curls appears.
